Growing Population : A Concern For Mankind

population of world

Population per Km.

World population is uncontrollable. It is growing very fast. Word has a population of more than 7 billion today. It is interesting to note that if a person tries to count one by one of them, he will take about 200 years to complete this. And if every person of the world contributes a single step, then the earth could be traveled almost 135 times around. If it goes like this, the population of the world will no doubt cross 9 billion towards the end of 2050. The constantly growing population is a challenge to the mankind.

30% of the World’s people live in China and India. It has been estimated that in this way, India’s population will cross China’s towards the end of 2020. On the other hand, we have very limited resources with us to meet this challenge. It is another way we are inviting poverty, joblessness, diseases and unnatural deaths.  What’s more, 52% of total population are young and between the age of 30 – 35 years. 90% of them live in underdeveloped or developing countries. More than half of the World’s wealth belongs to the rich. 80% of the natural resources are being utilized by the elite groups, which are 25% of World’s population. Likewise, only 20% people consume 58% of the total energy resources. Every year, nearly 4 million people die for not getting pure water to drink. 2.5 billion have no toilets. According to UNO, around 2crore people live in other countries as refugees. Nearly 7crore children leave their study midway, every year. They either serve in other’s houses or live as beggars. 2billion people never have two times meal a day. Though there is plenty of land on earth for shelter, the other resources are unavailable for now or never.

Face book is a social site platform. It has subscribers more than the population of any country. It is more than 2 billion. India is more at Face book than any other country. Coincidentally, India becomes the major contributor to World’s population. Every year India is going to add an Australia to its population.

The road connectivity in our country is second in the World. For thousand people, we have 3 km. Of road. Where as, in USA, every thousand citizen has 21 km. Among all countries, there are more traffic jams seen in India. There is no increase of road surfaces in comparison to the increase of vehicles.

Not only India is a populous country, but it has a huge mass of unemployed youths. There is an increase to it, year by year. To check this, our Government should either make some effective laws or generate sufficient employments for the youths. Lastly, if we fail to eradicate the problem, it would be only because of no utilization of youths.

The Strange Revenge ( A Short Story By Madhumita Mishra)

This Saturday evening was perhaps the darkest evening of my life. The setting of Sun in the occidental sky had given a golden color to the atmosphere. Soothing winds were blowing. I could hear the chirping sounds ofbirds. The dry leaves started to rustle as I walked to the graveyard. It seemed to me as if the whole nature was paying condolence to Dai Jan. Now it’s one year since she had left. It’s true that now I can’t find her any more but in the silent depths of my heart as I can still hear silent voice. After lighting up my candles and giving the boutique of roses to her I walked to the sea beach. At that point of time I wanted to enjoy solitude. As I sat down a flood of thoughts rushed down to my mind. I remembered my childhood days when she said a lot of stories to me as I was retaining to bed. She made me eat even the toughest vegetables with her buttering words. She supported me. She encouraged me and she stood beside me even in the dark of the darkest periods of my life. She was perhaps my best friend with whom I could share all my feelings.

Then I recalled how a vandal brutally battered her to death. That day I had a very important seminar at my college. I was completely engrossed in its preparation as I took the lead role in my group. Then suddenly my cell phone rang and Papa said that he and Mama had to go to hospital for my uncle had met an accident. He also informed me that Dai Jan, our maid was there at home alone. I had lots to do, so I said that I wouldarrive late. However, my seminar was over and I got a good response.

It was quite late in the evening and I rang up our land phone. Dai Jan said everything was fine and that I should return peacefully. I reached home and clicked the calling bell a number of times. Strangely, Dai Jan was not responding. Then suddenly I heard a loud sound, very loud cry. It didn’t even take a second for me to recognize that it was of Dai Jan. I threw my bag and rushed to our backyard. Fortunately, the back door wasopen. I was in complete shock, everything distorted.

I was extremely terrified calling Dai Jan. I ran up and saw the tiles of the stairs were broken. I banged the door of my parent’s room. Oh My God! A man was taking out the jewelries and cash from the locker box. I shouted and rushed to him. I even slapped him. But all of my stamina and strength had to bow down in front of him. He gave a powerful blow and my head got dashed against the edge of bed. I was bleeding hard. He came near me and pulling my hair, said that no-one could cause any harm to him; not even God. I tried hard to take that bag from him but he kicked my face and went through the window.

All my screaming and shouting went into vain. Suddenly, I saw the bath room door was open. I could see Dai Jan’s feet. Then what I saw was literally soul shaking. I was dumfounded. That vindictive man had squeezed her neck with a pipe. Oh! No. I shouted to my extreme pitch. I was shivering. With trembling hands I unfolded the pipe. I checked her pulse. She was no more. Her fingers had turned blue. I was blank. I ran down blindly and rang up to papa. Sheet!! No network. I had no idea about what to do. I rushed to my neighbor, Ria. She was already standing outside her house. She was taken aback for a while, when she saw me bleeding. By that time I was speechless. She wanted to take me to her house and dress my wound. She asked me what had happened and I was so nervous that, “Dai Jan! Dai Jan! “ were the only words I could say.

Before me she said that that day nothing was going well. I was bleeding and a man had died just there having met with an accident. Strange! My eyes all of a sudden fell upon the huge crowd. They were out of sight and out of mind. Banging her hands I ran to the road and to my utter surprise I saw that the same man was taken inside a van. A person looked at me sorrowfully said, “Sorry mam ! The man was spot dead”.

My parents came. Both of them were equally shocked as I was. This was a great blow to our family.

Investigation took place. We got back our possessions. But the damage which that rascal had caused was irreparable. Dai Jan had formed an integral part of my life.

“Divine Revenge! Yes Divine vengeance “was he only term I reflected at that point of time and observed by an unseen eye.

At His court, justice is guaranteed. Every night I perceive her sweet touch. Every morning I hear her tender voice. Today also no one can fill the vacuum, which Dai Jan has created in my life. She may not be now around me but she will continue to live in my heart for ever and forever.

Dussehra 2017 : It’s Mythological Background

This year on 30th September, Saturday, we will celebrate Dussehra or Vijay Dashmi with great enthusiasm. Here, I write some of it’s mythological stories why we celebrate this.

In different corners of the World different festivals are observed round the year. It brings about social unity and communal harmony and at the same time, it gives pleasure and amusement. Festivals are important part of society. Different festivals are celebrated by different regions and different religious groups. Each and every festival has its’ own significance. Like National festivals (such as Independence Day, the Republic day, Gandhi Jayanti, Children’s day, Teachers’ day etc.), Indians of different groups observe festivals of their own (such as: The Christians of India celebrate their Christmas, the Good Friday. Shikhs observe the birthday of Guru Nanak. Farmers of India observe the occasion of new harvest. The Muslims observe their festivals like Id-ul-Fittar, Id-ul-zuha, Ramzan, Moharrum etc.).

Among the festivals observed by Hindus, Durga puja, Dushera, Ramlila, Diwali, Holi, Rath Yatra, Saraswati puja, Ganesh puja, Shiv Ratri, Ram Navami, Janmastami are very famous.

The festival of Duga puja is celebrated mostly in Bengal and Odisha.Durga puja is celebrated as Dushera in the Northern and Western provinces of India in another style (like Garva). It is celebrated with great jubilation throughout the country. Schools, colleges, offices and other organizations remain closed during that period.

The mythological Backgrounds

First Story: The legend goes that Sri Ram Chandra supposed to be an incarnation of Lord Bishnu went to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, imprisoned by Ravan, the most powerful warrior in the World. Despite his best efforts Ram failed to defeat Ravan. Ram was advised to appease Mother Durga and win her blessings to kill Ravan. Ram offered puja to Goddess Durga solemnly and with all sanctity with one hundred eight blue lotuses. Mother Durga was pleased with his puja and granted him, his wish that he would now be able to killing. On the day of Dushera, Ram killed Ravan and rescued Sita from her imprisonment.

The Hindus believe that the Divine Mother, who could bless Ram, may also bless them and take away their evils and misfortunes. So they worship her at the same time of the year and in the same manner as Ram did in the past.

The festival is observed for four days. It starts on the seventh day of bright fortnight of Aswin and continues up to tenth day which is called Dushera. Beautiful images of the deity are built with straw, clay and color. Those are adorned with fine clothes, ornaments and flowers and placed on the decorated altars. Then the ceremonialworship starts. The last puja is held on Dushera day and the images are carried in a great procession for their immersion in the river. This is called immersion ceremony and the whole festival ends here.

The Second Story: The story says that demon king Mahisasura was greenfly a wish by Brahmadev and became immortal. He and other demons terrorized people for no fault of theirs. He was invincible and not to be killed by any man, god or woman of ordinary birth. God and goddesses were at a loss to decide what to do. All of them went to Bishnu, the Almighty God and prayed to Him to find out a way of his death. According to His advice, all of them prayed together. Their prayer worked wonders. Out of the space was born Mother Durga with enormous vigor and uncommon beauty. On Her request the gods and goddesses gave their weapons to Her. She now became too powerful to be vanquished. On the tenth day of full moon of Awina, She killed the demon king and saved the earth as well as gods and goddesses from hi persecution. Since then people have been worshiping Mother Durga with a view to pleasing Her and winning Her blessings for fulfillment of their desires.

The festival comes off in the month of Aswina when the earth is clad with the loveliest autumnal beauty. The image of Durga is not worshiped alone. With Her are worshiped Lord Shiva,Her husband, two sons Ganesh and Kartikeya and her two daughters, Laxmi and Saraswati. The idol of Durga stands majestically on a pedestal. She stands in a great posture, with one of Her foot firmly planted on the chest of demon Mahisasura.

The celebration continues from sixth day to the tenth day of maxim moon. On the tenth day comes the Bijaya-Dasami when the idols are immersed in the river

A Day When Everything Went Wrong

My niece Madhumita faced an accident while she was on the way to appear in her examination .

Later , she narrated the event at the essay competition in her college entitled ” A  Day When
Everything Went Wrong ”  and  was awarded  as  the best  .

Here is the story for my friends .

It was a fine Saturday morning. I got up in haste. Quickly I got ready for my school. It was 7.05 am and my mother shouted at me for not taking my breakfast properly. However I ran to my bus stop and to my utter misfortune the bus had already left. I was literally breathless. I couldn’t afford to go a single minute late in my maths examination. Again I ran to my house and luckily my brother was there to take me to my school. I thanked God for that and bidding goodbye to my mother we both went to school. On the way we saw huge mass gathering for there took place an accident. My brother stopped there for a while. I actually didn’t want him to go and inspect the matter. Rather I said him to take another route. He managed to take me by another way. Suddenly my eye fell on my watch and I saw there were fifteen more minutes for our examination to start. I just closed my eyes and prayed that I would be able to attend my examination properly. My brother asked me not to worry and assured that we would reach school in just five minutes. He raised the pin of the speedometer to 80 .I took a deep breath of relaxation as I could see my school in front of my eyes. Then suddenly two dogs rushed to the middle of the road fighting strenuously. My brother failed to control the speed and ultimately one of the dogs came between the two wheels of our bike. Our bike got hashed on the wall. My head got banged on a stone. But still then I was uttering “my examination, my examination!!”My brother was bleeding profusely. But he managed to take a lift from a van. I got admitted in the Hospital and had facial paralysis for some time. Seriously if I had to remember the worst day of my life then it would be none other than 4th January 2010.I felt so bad that I couldn’t even express my feelings in words. The whole year I worked so hard and at the end I got promotion to the next class on the basis of a medical certificate. But I thanked God for keeping me and my brother safe.
